Educational Innovation: Integrating Media Training into Business English Classrooms

In a presentation at the Business English Special Interest Group (BESIG2023) conference in Stuttgart, Konstantin Mikaberidze, English Teacher-Coordinator at the EMLV shared insights into the evolving business communication landscape and its intersection with media exposure.

The talk, “Introducing Media Training in the Business English Classroom,” presented a compelling case for incorporating media training elements into the curriculum to enhance students’ professional communication skills.

An innovative approach beyond conventional language teaching at EMLV

Konstantin Mikaberidze, a dedicated educator with years of experience, unveiled a method developed and currently employed in their Professional English course for EMLV A4 students.

This innovative approach goes beyond conventional language teaching, addressing the contemporary challenges business leaders face navigating the intricacies of media interactions.

The essence of the presentation lies in acknowledging that today’s business leaders often find themselves in the public eye without the support of dedicated PR departments.

This exposure can lead to communication blunders and mixed messaging. The proposed solution integrates media training, covering everything from camera competence to crisis communication, into the Business English classroom.

BESIG2023 conference’s contribution

Attendees at the BESIG2023 conference were treated to a comprehensive program highlighting such initiatives’ importance in the education sector.

The conference, organized by the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) Business English Special Interest Group (BESIG), serves as a crucial platform for professional development, networking, and staying abreast of the latest trends in Business English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

Konstantin Mikaberidze emphasized the significance of participating in conferences like BESIG. They stressed that such events offer educators an invaluable opportunity for professional growth, idea exchange, and networking with global professionals in the field.

This year’s conference theme, “Business Intelligence,” explored the intersection of business and artificial intelligence, providing a rich ground for diverse perspectives and research presentations.

The transversal nature of the Language Department at EMLV

When asked about the impact of the conference on their daily work at EMLV, Konstantin Mikaberidze highlighted the transversal nature of the Language Department, which serves three schools (EMLV, ESILV, and IIM) at De Vinci Higher Education.

Presenting at an international conference was described as an opportunity to disseminate work and receive input from esteemed peers, fostering discussions and idea exchanges among educators from different countries.

While the initiative did not receive direct involvement from EMLV, De Vinci Higher Education financed the participation and travel expenses, showcasing the institution’s support for professional development and knowledge exchange.

According to Konstantin Mikaberidze, sharing these experiences with the public is essential. Conferences like BESIG catalyse and share new ideas among educators, potentially influencing international courses and coursebooks.

EMLV’s Language Department’s ambitious plans

Looking ahead, the Language Department at EMLV has ambitious plans to participate in 3–4 conferences annually to present talks at each.

Regular participation in conferences such as IATEFL, Eaquals, TESOL France, and UPLEGESS demonstrates the commitment to staying at the forefront of language education trends and contributing to the global discourse on language teaching and learning.

Konstantin Mikaberidze expressed gratitude for the positive feedback and validation received at BESIG2023, affirming the importance of continued conference participation to foster growth, innovation, and collaboration in Business English teaching.
