France’s Attractivity is Higher than Ever for International Students

Campus France’s latest barometer shows that international students have never been more satisfied about studying abroad in France than in 2017. Here are a few of the reasons why 9 international students out of 10 recommend France as a study destination.

The survey was conducted by Kantar Sofres from July to October 2017 on 14 245 students, whether studying in France at the time, planning to study in France in the future or who studied in France in the past. This is the third survey of the kind, two polls were conducted in 2011 and 2013 on similar themes. Almost all indicators have improved since then.

Feeling welcome in France

87% of international students are satisfied with the way they were welcomed upon their arrival in France and throughout their academic stay. This indicator has increased by five points since 2013. Education follow-up is deemed satisfactory for 81% of the sample and 78% of students say they are in touch with their professors. France does have areas where improvement is still needed, although they have become better over the past years: 39% of consulted students think France’s cost of living is too high (they were 47% in 2013) and 44% of them think accomodation is too expensive. Quite inevitably, students living in Paris are more critical than their peers studying outside of the capital. However, opinions on these questions have improved because of the general inflation everywhere in the world.

France ranks number four in the study destination countries, benefiting from the steam loss of the USA and the UK who fail to attract students due to political reasons. The barometer shows a higher attractivity gain for France than for the USA, the UK and Germany.

#1 reason to choose France: the quality of education

When asked what is the main reason why they chose France as a study abroad destination, 46% of students consulted by Kantar have answered “the quality of education”, which still benefits from an excellent image throughout the world .

41% of them wanted to improve their command of French or learn it altogether, 38% of them said the main reason they were attracted to France was because of the country’s cultural interest. 34% of students chose France for the good reputation of its schools and its professors. Another reason stated by 32% of the sample is the diplomas’ value.
