Francesca, class of 2016, studied abroad at London South Bank University in BBA Marketing

Francesca Paganini, currently a 4th year student at the EMLV, spent her entire third year abroad at London South Bank University. Upon her return to France she shared her experiences about her year abroad (the EMLV has established a joint agreement with London South Bank University for a double degree).

“After High School, I wasn’t sure what to do next: so I opted to study something broad based that would allow me to specialize later on. In this sense, the broad nature of a business school curriculum seemed ideal.

Why did I choose the EMLV? Firstly, because several people recommended the school to me; they spoke about the quality of the curriculum, the teaching, the student support and the campus which is well worth a visit. Also, my brother had already studied at the EMLV so he was the perfect person to show me the school and provide an all-around perspective.

After the first two years, I decided to spend one whole year in London on an exchange program: I therefore spent two semesters at London South Bank Univeristy, located in the ‘Elephant and Castle’ neighborhood.

My choice was influenced by my intention of pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration, specializing in Marketing, but also because London is a lively city that is ever-growing and because I wanted to spend time in an Anglo-Saxon country to perfect my English.

The majority of the teachers at the university are active professionals, which is very beneficial and less ‘academic’ for students. There is a good relationship between the students who come from all over the world. I met many people at the university and from outside as well (friends or friends of friends). I chose to live with a friend rather than live on campus where there are apartments available for up to 8 people.

There are not a lot of modules, but more of an emphasis on personal study, which is different from the French university system. The modules are very interesting (Business Simulation, Consumer Behavior, Strategic Management etc.) and the BBA also involves writing a research thesis. This is quite difficult but very interesting indeed.

As far as London is concerned, the cost of living is expensive, which you have to take into consideration. I also worked part time in a shop to finance my life in London, since my timetable was not too busy with only around 15 hours of classes per week. But don’t be fooled, there are a lot of presentations and case studies to work on.

I really liked London and the English mind-set: you never get bored. There are always lots of things to do and places to visit. I visited Brighton Beach and I came back to Paris about once a month. I was able to continue playing tennis and enjoyed jogging around Hyde Park. Every area has its own style, each area is almost like a separate village…

I recommend London to students who are choosing their Erasmus destination; it’s an enriching experience on both a personal and professional level.

Another great advantage of studying in the UKs capital city is that students are never far away from friends and family; it only takes two hours on the Eurostar to get between London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord. Also, London is one of the most visited cities in Europe, quite like Paris!

For students who are worried about going away to another country alone, you should take into account that the start might be a bit difficult but once you’ve got used to the place, only good things will follow. You just need to be brave and immerse yourself in your new environment: these days studying abroad is no longer an option if you want to make your degree count.

I could certainly envisage going back to London for my final year internship because I’m pretty hooked on the city!”
