Between having the best programs, teachers, and graduates, let’s unlock the why behind the importance of business school accreditations.
Let’s face it, a college or business school education is labor, time, and financial investment, so how can we be sure that the degrees gained are worth anything after everything that students and schools have invested in them? The primary answer is that accreditation is the way to go.
Employers, schools, and other concerned parties rely on accreditation to ensure that you, as a future professional, have received adequate education without having to test you. It establishes criteria that allow you to move between schools and employers to have confidence in you when you are hired. It’s one of those things that you don’t realize how important it is until you don’t have it. So, what exactly is it, and why does it matter so much?
Accreditation is a fancy word that basically refers to a “quality check“. An accredited school has passed a rigorous inspection by an educational authority to ensure that it satisfies its criteria and is qualified to teach students in the programs it offers. A degree, especially a graduate degree, from a reputable institution is valuable and that is why it is critical to evaluate your business school’s accreditation status and ensure that it meets your needs and expectations before investing your time and money.
Specifically to business school accreditations, we talk about AACSB-accredited schools that have better programs, better faculty, better students with higher overall GPAs, more international students, and more employers that recruit from them.
The AACSB has a reputation for having extremely high standards. AACSB has been accrediting business programs for nearly a century and requires universities to go through a rigorous application procedure. AACSB accreditation isn’t easy to obtain, and it might take anywhere from three to seven years to complete. AACSB accreditation is granted to less than 5% of the world’s 15,000+ business programs, making it a very select group.
Employers assess the school you attended and if it is accredited by a reputable agency when you graduate and hunt for a career. They will doubt the authenticity of your degree and your potential as a competitive job candidate if it came from an institution with questionable accreditation. Furthermore, no school will accept transfer credits from an unaccredited university if you want to transfer to another college at any point during your academic career.
